New Zealand Certificate in Freestyle Group Exercise (Level 4)
This programme is for people designing and leading their own group exercise classes.
Completing the Freestyle Group Exercise certificate will equip you with the skills and confidence to create and deliver fun, effective and safe group fitness classes, specialising in your chosen elective.
Before you start
To enrol in this programme, you need to be working in a paid job with an exercise facility or organisation, self-employed, or a volunteer with regular and consistent shifts.

What's involved?
This 60-credit qualification is designed to be completed in 8 to 12 months.
You'll be trained and observed in the workplace. Your assessments will be completed online.
You will choose from one of 10 electives:
- Step
- Aquafitness
- Indoor cycling
- Free weights
- Cardio martial fit
- Circuit
- Group fitness dance
- Mind and body
- Core conditioning with equipment
- Yoga (the Yoga elective is a little different from the others! Learn more about it here)
Key learning areas include:
- Choreographing, delivering and adapting safe and effective group exercise classes for different class types and varying exercise abilities
- Encouraging participants to develop skills and knowledge to improve their own health and wellbeing
- Business skills
- Anatomy and physiology
- Integrating culturally appropriate values and processes.
Did you know...
By completing this programme you will be eligible to register with the New Zealand Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs), at the level of Group Exercise Own Choreography.
Freestyle Group Exercise is part of the Apprenticeship - Multi Skilled Exercise Instructor (Level 4). After completing the certificate, contact us if you're interested in taking your career up a level and enrolling in the apprenticeship.

Completing the Yoga elective will prepare you with foundational knowledge and skills to help continue your journey towards becoming a yoga instructor.
Exercise Foundations Programme (Level 3)
Completing the Exercise Foundations programme will equip you to assist people using a gym, fitness facility or engaging in community exercise.
This programme is eligible for a Building Foundations scholarship, which provides zero-fee enrolment and fully subsidised assessments to make career progression in the exercise industry more accessible for everyone.
New Zealand Apprenticeship: Multi-Skilled Exercise Instructor (Freestyle) (Level 4)
By taking on the Multi-skilled Exercise apprenticeship, you will be equipped with the complete package of skills and knowledge - able to deliver group and individual exercise instruction, and own and run a personal training business.
